The best give I ever gave was a handmade ceramic vase to my mom. My mom has always been incredibly artistic. She is so creative and imaginative, and she is always creating wonderful things. Unfortunately, the creative gene did not get passed to me. While I would make little craft projects growing up, I lacked the artistic talent that my mom hand. I could not draw or paint, despite my appreciation for the arts. I even voluntarily took art classes instead of study hall in high school to try and develop the skill – to no avail. It was the only class in high school that I ever received an “A for effort” in.
When I went to college it was mandatory that I take an art class. The prospect of that terrified me. I was never good at art and now I would have to do it at the college level. So I put it off until the last semester of my Associate’s degree. It was either take the art class or don’t graduate. So after considering my options, I decided to take a pottery class. I though maybe with the concepts of form and function, this might be a type of art I could take to. And it turned out to be right!
For once I was enjoying art and could share in the enjoyment that my mom had from creating beautiful things. When it came time for midterms we had to make a coil pot. Everyone knows that basic coil pot – we made them in elementary school. You take the clay and roll it into a skinny long roll strip and then wrap it in circles until it forms a little pot. Well our pots had to be at least 12 inches tall. After putting it off as long as I could, I started to work on my pot. And after a while my pot became a vase. After working on it for a while longer, I scalloped the top and added roses I created to the rim. I managed to glaze it and fire it with no problems.
For the first time, I was truly proud of an artistic creation and I knew exactly what to do with it! I was going to give it to my mom – the person who inspired me and whom I knew would appreciate. I can remember the look of shock and appreciation on her face when I brought it home and gave it to her. She knew how hard it was for me to take to art and how much time I had spent to make that vase beautiful. This was also the first piece of custom, hand-made pottery she had every received. She still shows it off on display in her living room.
